Amazing Amrita Welcomes You to her WORLD!

Hey there! Welcome to my blog! My name is Amrita Prakash and I am here to update you on my life. Basically, the purpose of owning a blog is to update events occurring in your life, and sharing information with others. There are several purposes of using a blog, but the main reason I am using my blog, is because I would like to share all the activities, and assignments that we will be doing in English class. This first assignment used, will be the Short Story Thematic ISU, consisting of three texts. The three texts I chose are: 1) An Image - Master and Servant, 2) Article - Gender Roles - Sikhism, and lastly, 3) Poem - The Lonely Spider. There will be many more assignments and updates, so stay tuned and interested folks!
My main interest is watching movies. My choice and genre of movies are very different and vary in languages. I enjoy watching Hindi movies, and in Bollywood, my favourite actor would be Shahid Kapoor, who is in the picture above. My favourite movie, which Shahid stars in, would be, Dil Bole Hadippa, along side with Rani Mukherjee, my favourite actress.

The video above is my favourite song, Down featuring Jay Sean and Lil Wayne.
Jay Sean is my favourite Rn'B singer, and Lil Wayne is my favourite rapper, therefore making a good combination for me. Another reason I enjoy this video is because of how it was made, and theme of it.

Introduction - Lather and Nothing Else - ISU #1

The short story that I chose to compare was, Lather and Nothing Else, by Hernando Tellez. The theme of this story is that, the roles we play in our lives determine our actions. Basically, what this means is that, who we are in our lives, predict our thoughts, actions, and words. This is evident in Lather and Nothing Else, because the two separate roles were identified, and they were carried on through the actions made. The Barber, had one role and one job to fulfill, which was to shave any customer that came through the door of his barber shop. Whereas Torres, was an executioner, had the role to kill the revolutionaries. They both stuck to their parts, and did not let it interfere between each other.

1) Master and Servant - Image

The most common topic, of portraying roles or certain identities, would be a “master” and “servant” scenario. Usually, these roles define actions in a very noticeable way. In this image, the roles of a master and a servant are depicted. As you can see, the servant is serving his master, by polishing his shoe, while the master relaxes, and passes orders. This shows that the servant is almost sacrificing himself to his master, and obeying his command. It also shows, that the servant is giving into his master under some circumstance, whether it be his helplessness, or fear. This relates to the Barber and Torres from Lather and Nothing Else, because in the story, Toress plays a role, which is to be feared of, or more authorized to give demands, almost like a master. On the other hand, the Barber plays the role of someone who listens, obeys commands, and is under the helplessness to serve people, because of his job, just like a servant. This goes to show, that the roles in our lives can also rank us according to status.

2) Gender Roles - Sikhism - Article

Usually, our identities within society can have a major impact on us, and how others see us can predict their thoughts of what is to be expected of our actions. In this article, Exploring Sikhism – Equality, the roles between 2 different genders are depicted. It talks about women equality, and what is expected of the women by the male. The gender role between a male and a female played an important part in the everyday life, because the males and females had different responsibilities and duties, which made the actions of each very different from each other. Such as, in early Sikhism, a woman’s duty was to fulfill her husband’s requirements. A man’s sense of “right” was to overpower and rule his wife. Just like in Lather and Nothing Else, the two characters had completely different roles which made the outcome of their actions different from each other. For example, the Barber’s role was to shave his customers, and Toress’s role was to give death to those who were revolutionaries.

3) The Lonely Spider - Poem

The Lonely Spider

The lonely spider reaches out
For what, you might ask?
If not to spin his web then for what?
For his identity
The identity of him
His identity...

The lonely spider calls out
For what, you might ask?
If not for his mate then for what?
For his identity
The identity of him
His identity...

The lonely spider waits
For what, you might ask?
If not for his food then for what?
For his identity
The identity of him
His identity...

'A spider doesn't have feelings! '
How should you know?

'A spider isn't that smart! '
That could be true.

'A spider can never have a real identity! '
And neither could you, or any of us
But we try to find one even if we're not looking
And thats our life... after which we die

What have we done with our life up until then?
Either we've thrown it away, gave it up, wrecked it, lived it up to the fullest, took it for granted, or got far in it.
We still had one.
It's up to us what we shall do with it
Just like the lonely spider
Who will probably just end up on the bottom of your shoe anyways
- Andreanna Atkins

─› Our identity, and who we are in society has a great impact on our lives, whether it be, positive, or negative. In the poem above, The Lonely Spider by Andreanna Atkins, relates to the theme in many ways. Basically, the poem is about a spider who is trying to figure out who he is in life, or what he wants. Many times, he finds himself asking, or looking for his identity. Just like in the short story, Lather and Nothing Else, the Barber was trying to figure out which identity, or role, he should have played while attending Toress. He could have either chosen, ‘the Barber’, or to become the ‘revolutionary.’ Another reason this related to the theme is because whoever we are in society can actually predict our fate and the outcomes. The spider lived his life, seeking for his identity, rather than just living the free life he was given. This resulted in an early death. Comparing this to Lather and Nothing Else, would be after the Barber had made his choice. If he had decided to kill Toress, his new identity would have became, a target to kill.
